spring-break-summer-200x300Tips for Summer and Spring Break

Summer and spring break go hand-in-hand.  Spring break is here or almost here for almost everyone in North Texas.  We will have to change our clocks soon because ‘Spring Forward’ is almost here. And that means that, believe it or not, summer is almost here.  And, for divorce parents that means that it is time to pay attention to the details of your possession schedule in your divorce decree.

Read Your Divorce Decree

Now is the time to read over your divorce decree to make sure you understand what you need to do, how you have to do it and when you need to do it.   Standard possession includes notices that each parent has to give to the other.  Both parents have things to do to have their summer time with the kids.  The first notice date about summer in standard possession will be April 1st and the second date will be April 15th.  Your decree will tell you what your notice dates are and will include what you need to do.

Check the School Calendar

Check the school calendar.  In the spring it’s important to check for dates like spring break week, and the end of the school year days and others too.  You may also need to know what days will be early release days at the end of the school year, check and see what days were scheduled as snow/ice days and whether or not the kids will get to take those days off.  School calendars used to stay the same from year to year but they don’t anymore so it is worth going to the website for that.

Summer Notice

While you are reading your decree make sure you understand when to give notice your notices and how much time you get.  When conservators live more than 100 miles away from each other, the possessory conservator will have 42 days in the summer.  Notice regarding the way the 42 days will be divided over the summer has to be given by April 1st.  If the notice isn’t given, the 42 days will be from June 15th to July 27th.  Get to know what your decree says about summer.
